Movement 2013 Day One and Two Recap & Photos
By Alexis Simpson Movement is all about pacing yourself because it involves 3 days of festival and after parties featuring the best parties of the year. Our day one involved a full day of festival activity at Hart Plaza. Movement is a different kind of festival. In March, we traveled to Miami for the big and flashy Ultra Fest. Detroit’s EDM festival is more organic and features some big names mixed with more obscure and up-and-coming artists. The festival layout is manageable because fans don’t have to walk too far to get from state to stage. For us, day two was all about the afterparaties. Technically our day two started right…

of Montreal @ The Crofoot (Photos & Setlist)
Members of ‘of Montreal’ were hanging out on Crofoot’s outdoor deck area before their performance and interacting with fans. I observed one awkwardly sweet conversation where a fan gushed to a member of the band who took his praise graciously. It’s a great thing when a band isn’t afraid to take the time to hang out at the venue amidst their fans. The actual show was colorful, full of props, ghost-like characters, actors, clowns, balloons and mythical creatures that played around with common life themes. Unfortunately there was no photo pit that night and dark lighting so taking photos was trickier than usual. We must re-visit this band later next…

Mr. Moonlight Tour: Peter Murphy @ The Magic Stick 5-14-2013 (Photos, Setlist & Review)
By Alexis Simpson Whether Peter Murphy is performing his solo or Bauhaus material, he is captivating on stage. Peter is in the midst of the grueling Mr. Moonlight tour that starts out in North America, heads over to Europe, and then finishes up in North America again. This tour he is performing only Bauhaus material in celebration of 35 years of Bauhaus. His showmanship on stage was impressive as he interacted with the audience as only seasoned performers know how. Peter even managed to spot me and my camera hiding in an elevated corner far from the stage and flashed me a few poses. It was evident that Peter Murphy…

Terry Peake’s Art X Detroit Showcase: Junecast, Fireloom, & Bahamut (Photos)
Mid April we got the chance to document two nights of Terry Peake’s performances from Art X Detroit. It was inspirational and exciting to see such a diverse Detroit crowd learning about different Detroit artists and attending their performances and exhibits. Here are my fave photos from Terry Peake’s showcase of his bands Junecast, Fireloom, and Bahamut. Junecast and Fireloom performed at the DIA, and Bahamut performed at The Scarab Club. Catch Bahamut this Friday (May 10) at Small’s: DETROIT ALL AGES *THE GUTTER GHOULS *VOICE OF ADDICTION *BAHAMUT *SUB & Raffles! Bonobo wsg Shigeto @ The Crofoot 4/19 (Photos & Review)
By Alexis Simpson Shigeto (aka Zach Saginaw) and Bonobo (aka Simon Green) sold out The Crofoot, and drew a very diverse crowd. Local favorite and Ghostly International artist, Shigeto, had a small entourage with him of his closest friends and family members. He was seen hanging out with his crew right before popping on stage to perform his set that ranged from ambient and soothing to ghettotech ass-tastic music. He has excellent range! Shigeto then jumped on the drums to enhance his own music as it played live. Those that weren’t familiar with Shigeto were blown away. Bonobo had masses of instruments and equipment on stage. He first appeared on the…

Mindless Self Indulgence @ The Fillmore Detroit 4/20/13 (Photos, Concert Review, & Setlist)
By Alexis Simpson Mindless Self Indulgence mixed rowdy punk rock with a little bit of rap, and delivered a quirky one-of-a-kind performance this past Saturday at The Fillmore Detroit. Props to the fans for coming dressed in colorful edgy attire and bright easter egg hair. This tour is in support of MSI’s new album being released next month, How I learned to Stop Giving a Shit and Love. Back in the day MSI opened for Detroit’s own Insane Clown Posse, but has now developed their own cult-like following. The stage setup for the night was wide-open and clean with only one mic-stand, two small backdrops, and a mini-drum kit. This…
