Friday night at The Loving Touch was ZelooperZ’s Bothic Record Release party featuring Charles Tree, Skywalkr, Bulletproof Dolphin and of course, Zelooperz.  The crowd was a diverse mix of music lovers hip to the fact that ZelooperZ of the Bruiser Brigade crew, is one of the most interesting new artists not only in Detroit, but anywhere. ZelooperZ is a hustler because he has assembled a strong team of industry pros that are working to get his music heard worldwide. He’s already on the verge of being a media darling with publications like Vice, Complex, The Fader, XXL Magazine writing tidbits about him before his album has even been released yet.

ZelooperZ made his first appearance at The Loving Touch when he strolled through his fans and walked up on to the stage to greet the crowd and thank us for coming. He wore a black fur coat, ripped black pants, black t-shirt with small patches that looked like small planet Saturns with a Gothic cross on top, and stylish black leather moto boots. His jewelry was well thought-out and showed that Zelooperz has plenty of depth. He wore a thick multi-colored jeweled necklace made out of real gems, a thin chain with a dolphin charm, and another bigger chain holding a grim reaper. The bright gems and dolphin mixed with the grim reaper suited ZelooperZ perfectly since Bothic, as explained to Detroit alt weekly paper, Metro Times, is a mix of both darkness and light.

“Bothic” is bruiser gothic. Bothic is a term used to explain the way I felt when making this project, and an expression of an art form. A word me and the homies use to express a dark situation but also allowing yourself to see the light in it.

He also had on a large evil eye ring, a 4 finger big-ass ring, and a “Child of Hell” belt buckle from the clothing line Supreme of New York. You can tell a lot about an artist as to how they present themselves. ZelooperZ’s style screams of creativity, thoughtfulness, and defiance.  ZelooperZ is also 6’7″ and exceedingly skinny which means that he is going to get noticed in a crowd regardless.

On stage, ZelooperZ starting out in chill mode but ended in a frenzy. Fans danced with abandonment, and one young dude’s face even looked like it was melting off. Scattered throughout the crowd were ZelooperZ’s close friends that he acknowledged briefly throughout the night. He performed his entire album and owned the stage like he had been on stage for years. ISBD or “I Should be Dead” is probably his most well-known song as of yet, which not surprisingly received the most enthusiastic response. The video already has around 760k hits. Not too shabby. Some of the most memorable lyrics are: “Hammy to face Fucking her face,” “Homeless plenty of time Hungry as mice, I should be dead,” “The Xan and that Molly Shroom and the x Henny and Jenny Addie’s and I ain’t say lean All of the the shit that I did”

He’s raw, and the kids are going to eat that shit up.  Comments made by fans and haters on Facebook and the mean Internet are either love or hate. People that love the blandness of the radio and the status quo aren’t going to get him. Free-thinkers, party kids, and those of us thirsty for something new are going to love Bothic. His other newly released song “Elevators” gives a nod to that old school techno song by Interactive called “Elevator Up & Down” since the hook is mixed with, “ELEVATOR UP DOWN  UP DOWN ELEVATOR UP DOWN…” and “LET THEM HOS FIGHT LET THEM HOS FIGHT.” It’s catchy, dirty, mischievously fun, and even better live. At the end of the night, ZelooperZ auctioned off one of his paintings to a guy for $180. ZelooperZ is a talented drawer and painter, and can be found on Instagram selling his work as well. Watch out world for this one; he’s about to tear shit up:)

Movement Weekend 2015 Photos

By Alexis Simpson

We started our Movement weekend off at the new Populux bar which used to be the Magic Stick.  The roster of Acquaviva, Bell and Pullen was solid so we figured we would get the party kicked off early since since Movement didin’t officially start until Saturday.

Stacey Pullen (official page)

When I first found out that the Magic Stick was closing,  at first I didn’t dwell on the fact that I had many great memories from that place. When checking out Populux for the first time, those memories surprisingly came flooding back. The staircase where I shot shows from like the Death Grips was still there…I remembered when Nardo and I hung out with the Black Angels, and I got to talk with their talented female drummer. I thought about the time I shot Surfer Blood, and now one of their members has a bad form of cancer. Or how about when I get to photograph Wanda Jackson, a legend in her own right. Despite all of these good memories of the Magic Stick, I still enjoyed our time at Populux. Populux has it’s own sentimental value because the owner, Amir, is the uncle of one of my high school friends. Amir used to get us into clubs like Industry in Pontiac way before I ever dreamed I would get to work in the music industry. Despite that it was 1am, we saw Amir at his new club taking in the crowd. He was photographing the crowd and taking pictures. It was inspiring to see a businessman well past 70+ working so late and loving what he was doing. His work shows. Populux looks amazing, the staff was on point, and he is booking excellent talent. Out with the old, in with the new.

Speaking of old, after Populux we went over to TV Lounge which used to be one of our fave spots. Not anymore. Poor TV is about to lose all their decent bookings to Populux because it has gone downhill. TV Lounge has become more like a frat bar, where you have to fight for a drink, and spend an even longer time waiting in line for the bathroom. TV Lounge has only 3 bathrooms for a zillion patrons. Their bartenders looked a little worse for the wear, especially when compared to the smooth and friendly bar staff at Populux. All drinks were served in these sad little plastic cups with lots of ice. It was sad.

Movement weekend wouldn’t be Movement weekend without a stop at The Works. Those that frequent The Works know the main benefits of The Works which don’t need to be written out:) I went to see DJ Assault and DJ Pig & Dan. DJ Assault played a surprisingly lame set which focused on lame 90’s songs like “The Tootsie Roll” and “Da Dip.” Perhaps Assault thought this is what the Movement crowd would want? Oh well, DJ Assault usually is badazz so he is forgiven. The Works is still one of our fave spots, and Populux may just be moving into spot #2. Let us know if you have any other recommendations…

Lastly, I only made it to Movement on Sunday for Danny Brown, Eddie Fowlkes, Loco Dice, Dog Blood and Juan Atkins. Below are the pictures from that!

What it’s Like to Photograph the Detroit Auto Show 2015 (NAIAS 2015 Photos)

By Alexis Simpson

I’ve photographed the North American International Auto Show in Detroit the last three years, and it’s a love/hate event. The major pro of photographing the show is that I’ve gotten to sell my photo to publications such as Forbes and The Wall Street Journal. In fact, the first photo I ever had published was a car photo from the auto show. This year I know I already had at least 8 photos published in The Wall Street Journal. Being published is an unbeatable feeling. Some photographers make sure to capture each car unveiling event as well as attend all the big parties. I haven’t gotten involved to that extent yet,  but there is always next year. NAIAS always has an air of excitement surrounding it, so it’s always entertaining to check out the latest ‘IT” car, scope out the models, look for celebs, and enjoy the free food/booze.

The annoying part of NAIAS can be dealing with some of the over-zealous photogs. Sometimes they get so overwhelmed in their excitement to check out the interior and exterior of the cars, that they take crazy amounts of photos. Ideally in order to sell a photo of an auto show car, it helps if there are not too many people in the frame. Press week is busy so it’s inevitable that I’ll have to wait a short while to get my money shot. Sometimes I’ll get stuck behind an over zealous photographer who is in the midst of taking 75-100 photographers of a single car. UGH. Usually this is an overseas press photog who probably doesn’t get a chance to see this sort of event, so all you can do is be patient. Sometimes car industry gurus will be in networking convos right in your frame as well. Usually they’ll move if you ask nicely. If they don’t hear your request, then I recommend snapping a few quick photos of them until they take the hint:) Also, you have to wait for the car polishers that are hired to keep the vehicles looking sharp. Patience is the name of the game because of the hectic atmosphere. It can be frustrating to wait because it’s important to get all photos edited and uploaded ASAP to meet deadlines and increase sales.

Here are some photos from this year’s show.
