Cake wsg Kaleo at The Detroit Fillmore (Photos)
By Alexis Simpson My two favorite Cake signs are “Sheep go to Heaven” and “Mexico.” “Sheep go to Heaven” was the first song of the night so I tried not to dance around like a goof while taking photos from the pit. For “Mexico,” I sat in the balcony and sung along like a happy kid. I was shooting my second show for Metro Times, and got to shoot Cake last minute. Singer John McCrea graciously took his hat off and bowed to the crowd when he first walked on the stage. Despite McCrea being sick, Cake sounded superb live. http://www.cakemusic.com Members: Vincent DiFiore, John McCrea, Xan McCurdy, Gabriel Nelson, Paulo…

Travel: A Culinary Honeymoon to Traverse City and Chicago (Photos)
By Alexis Simpson We left for Traverse City the day after our honeymoon. Our dog didn’t want us to go. We stayed at the Grand Traverse Resort. We got a newly remodeled King Tower room after Paul finagled with the front desk. Yay! The shower was big enough to fit 6 ppl, and the view was amazing. www.grandtraverseresort.com/ Soon after we checked in, we left to check out the Black Star Farms winery’s restaurant, “Heath and Vine.” The road leading into the winery had lots of photo opportunities. www.blackstarfarms.com/ The meal at Heath and Vine was so fresh and good. By the time we got to Black Star Farms, we didn’t…

Awolnation @ The Detroit Fillmore (Photos) 7-3-15
By Alexis Simpson Awolnation is one of the most innovative and interesting bands currently touring. Frontman Aaron Bruno is quirky, but not overly so, meaning that his music is still relatable. The band last played at St. Andrew’s Hall in Detroit a few years ago, but last week the progressed to Detroit’s Fillmore. Bruno is a strong performer, and his band is solid as well. This is a group to pay attention to. Awolnation just released a new album a few weeks ago, and at first listen, it’s one of the best new albums we have heard lately. http://www.awolnationmusi.com https://www.facebook.com/AWOLNATION/ https://www.instagram.com/awolnationmusic

Movement Weekend 2015 Photos
By Alexis Simpson We started our Movement weekend off at the new Populux bar which used to be the Magic Stick. The roster of Acquaviva, Bell and Pullen was solid so we figured we would get the party kicked off early since since Movement didin’t officially start until Saturday. John Acquaviva Daniel Bell Stacey Pullen (official page) When I first found out that the Magic Stick was closing, at first I didn’t dwell on the fact that I had many great memories from that place. When checking out Populux for the first time, those memories surprisingly came flooding back. The staircase where I shot shows from like the Death Grips…

Technolo-gee: Adventures in the Online Job Market
By Dave Palmer Modern society is increasingly turning to electronic solutions for nearly everything. Whether it be shopping, banking, or communicating, we hear the same mantra: It’s faster and more convenient. Job hunting has, of course, been relegated almost entirely to the online world as well. The same idea of greater convenience, easier connection to leads, and the ability to more readily build a network of connections calls to job hunters like the siren song of old. Just never mind those jagged rocks you’re heading for. And those jagged rocks in reality is these questions: Whose convenience is the online job market really targeted for? Is it the convenience of…
