An Interview with Ty Stone
Ty Stone has been described as “a powerhouse singer in an unprettified package.” This Detroit native has been earning lots of fans due to his raw talent, lyrics that hit home, and likeable personality. Music has always been a big part of Ty Stone’s life, but it took a little help from Kid Rock to take it to a whole new level. A good friend of Ty’s was able to slip Kid Rock a demo during a Piston’s game, and not long after, Ty found himself hanging with Kid Rock, touring, and putting out a new album on Top Dog/Atlantic Records. Ty’s story inspires, and he deserves his success. See…

Panic! at the Disco in Royal Oak @ Arts, Beats, & Eats 9/2/2011 (Photos and Review)
Coachella? Lolla? SXSW? Sure, they’re great…But the small city of Royal Oak has been pulling together their own mini music festival full of great acts at an unbeatable price. The city was able to snag Panic at the Disco before the band sets out on their Fall tour. Panic! singer, Brendon Urie, quickly commented to the crowd how hot it was in Detroit and teased that he may have to remove some clothing if the audience is willing to as well. Record temperatures or not, Panic! at the Disco put on a lively, full-sounding performance complete with great lighting, superb musicianship, and Urie’s distinctive and lyrical voice. You didn’t have…

The Psychedelic Furs at Royal Oak’s Eats, Beats & Eats (Photos & Review)
The Psychedelic Furs are the kind of band that can take music from the past and make it new again. They drew a large crowd on the last day of Royal Oak’s Arts, Eats, & Beats and put on a strong performance. Richard Butler had a lot of interesting Vogue type poses and a killer smile as his best accessory. Fellow band members Tim Butler (bass), Rich Good (guitar), Mars Williams (saxophone), Amanda Kramer (keyboards), and Paul Garisto (drums) also owned the stage as rockstars should. The Royal Oak festival crowd was enthusiastic about the performance due to the high-energy and polished sound of The Psychedelic Furs. The group is…

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. @ Arts, Beats & Eats Festival in Downtown Royal Oak (Photos and Review) 9/2/2011
On Friday, I was excited to finally see for myself why Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. is one of the most talked about emerging bands of the moment. They did not disappoint, in fact they were even more upbeat, fun and funky than I had realized since I had never seen them live before. Joshua Epstein and Daniel Zott came across on stage as laid-back, genuinely nice, but also awesomely talented. The guys encouraged the audience members to forget about how silly they may appear to their neighbor in the audience and let loose. It was entertaining to see a diverse crowd of young and old enjoying the performance. DEJ finished…

2011: The Year of Bright Eyes (Photos and Concert Review @ Majestic Theatre Detroit, MI)
Michigan was lucky enough to host Bright Eyes three times in 2011. The Majestic Theatre show was special because the band fully displayed a performance that was, “…for the love of the game”. This is the statement I like to use when I find an artist of any sort that participates in their art for the pure enjoyment and love/passion for whatever it is they do. That night Bright Eyes played for us for about two hours and twenty minutes. That impressed me because the group has s pretty strenuous tour schedule, and keeping up that amount of energy isn’t easy. The engaging Conor Oberst was especially magnetic that night…

Welcome to the Show! (An Intro to Dave’s Column called Society’s Slideshow)
Welcome to the Show! Society’s Slideshow, that is. A mental photograph of the world converted into the proverbial thousand words. Well, maybe I won’t use that many. A slideshow, whether on a computer or a projector, delivers to its audience a representation of the world as it was seen by the presenter. No one takes photographs of every second of their vacation. Instead what one sees is sort of a still life highlight reel. This highlight reel is subject to the interpretation of its audience. What they see is what they choose to see. Perhaps they’ll notice the guy falling of the dock in the background of that photograph of…

Identity Festival Detroit 8/12/2011 (Photos and Review)
This year, the newly formed Identity festival came to DTE Energy Music Energy Theatre. Detroit was the second stop on the first ever touring electronic-music festival that introduces itself as a “sensory extravaganza” that possesses “unparalleled production.” They did not disappoint! Throughout all stops of the tour, the festival is simultaneously running three stages: Rockstar Energy Drink’s Dim Mak Festival Stage, the Advent Stage, and the Skullcandy Main Stage. I was impressed that even though Detroit was only the second stop on the tour, the timeline of all stages was accurate and all performances flowed smoothly. Our first stop was to the Rockstar stage to check out the fantastic electropop duo, Holy…
