Welcome to the Show! (An Intro to Dave’s Column called Society’s Slideshow)
Welcome to the Show! Society’s Slideshow, that is. A mental photograph of the world converted into the proverbial thousand words. Well, maybe I won’t use that many. A slideshow, whether on a computer or a projector, delivers to its audience a representation of the world as it was seen by the presenter. No one takes photographs of every second of their vacation. Instead what one sees is sort of a still life highlight reel. This highlight reel is subject to the interpretation of its audience. What they see is what they choose to see. Perhaps they’ll notice the guy falling of the dock in the background of that photograph of…

Identity Festival Detroit 8/12/2011 (Photos and Review)
This year, the newly formed Identity festival came to DTE Energy Music Energy Theatre. Detroit was the second stop on the first ever touring electronic-music festival that introduces itself as a “sensory extravaganza” that possesses “unparalleled production.” They did not disappoint! Throughout all stops of the tour, the festival is simultaneously running three stages: Rockstar Energy Drink’s Dim Mak Festival Stage, the Advent Stage, and the Skullcandy Main Stage. I was impressed that even though Detroit was only the second stop on the tour, the timeline of all stages was accurate and all performances flowed smoothly. Our first stop was to the Rockstar stage to check out the fantastic electropop duo, Holy…

Hole in the Wall: Steve’s Bar Revisited Detroit, MI
We go to shows at St. Andrew’s in Detroit a lot. Door times can be unpredictable so a lot of time is spent at Steve’s Bar because it’s next to St. Andrew’s. The place has a type of old-world charm that is uniquely its own. Three things make this place interesting: 1. The Owners 2. The Decor 3. Travelin’ Blues Sophia and Steve Francis have owned and opearated Steve’s Bar for about 41 years. These sites have some great background on their story: http://metrogal84.blogspot.com/2009/08/lessons-learned-from-steves-place.html http://www2.metrotimes.com/editorial/story.asp?id=3167 http://detroit.untappedcities.com/2011/02/03/steves-place-detroit-dive-bar/ It’s obvious that this bar is a beloved place of Detroit and helps to give our city its own aura. Steve’s warm, gentle and…

Bright Eyes in Grand Rapids 8/3/2011 (Photos and Review)
Originally posted on Navdo Bright Eyes performed a passionate, lively, and poignant set at the beautiful Frederik Meijer Gardens Ampitheater in Grand Rapids. Dazzling Frontman, Conor Oberst even remarked that it was one of the most beautiful locations he had ever played. Bright Eyes is a MUST SEE performance due to the full band sound, sincere lyrics, and magical prowess of Conor Oberst. One of the best moments of the night came when Conor told the audience a story about how a certain unnamed celebrity paid him a lot of money to play “First Day of my Life” at her wedding. Speculation suggests Conor played the love song at the…
