The Psychedelic Furs at Royal Oak’s Eats, Beats & Eats (Photos & Review)
The Psychedelic Furs are the kind of band that can take music from the past and make it new again. They drew a large crowd on the last day of Royal Oak’s Arts, Eats, & Beats and put on a strong performance. Richard Butler had a lot of interesting Vogue type poses and a killer smile as his best accessory. Fellow band members Tim Butler (bass), Rich Good (guitar), Mars Williams (saxophone), Amanda Kramer (keyboards), and Paul Garisto (drums) also owned the stage as rockstars should. On Friday, I was excited to finally see for myself why Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. is one of the most talked about emerging bands of the moment. They did not disappoint, in fact they were even more upbeat, fun and funky than I had realized since I had never seen them live before. Joshua Epstein and Daniel Zott came across on stage as laid-back, genuinely nice, but also awesomely talented. The guys encouraged the audience members to forget about how silly they may appear to their neighbor in the audience and let loose. 2011: The Year of Bright Eyes (Photos and Concert Review @ Majestic Theatre Detroit, MI)
Michigan was lucky enough to host Bright Eyes three times in 2011. The Majestic Theatre show was special because the band fully displayed a performance that was, “…for the love of the game”. This is the statement I like to use when I find an artist of any sort that participates in their art for the pure enjoyment and love/passion for whatever it is they do. That night Bright Eyes played for us for about two hours and twenty minutes. That impressed me because the group has s pretty strenuous tour schedule, and keeping up that amount of energy isn’t easy. Third Man Records is releasing a new Insane Clown Posse single produced by Jack White, backed by JEFF the Brotherhood and mixed with a little bit of Mozart. The song is called “Leck Mich Im Arsch” which means “Lick Me in the Arse.” The 7-inch single and digital download also offers another ICP track called “Mountain GIrl.” A limited edition vinyl-edition single will be available at Third Man Rolling Record Store at MIFest this September 17th. Identity Festival Detroit 8/12/2011 (Photos and Review)
This year, the newly formed Identity festival came to DTE Energy Music Energy Theatre. Detroit was the second stop on the first ever touring electronic-music festival that introduces itself as a “sensory extravaganza” that possesses “unparalleled production.” They did not disappoint! Throughout all stops of the tour, the festival is simultaneously running three stages: Rockstar Energy Drink’s Dim Mak Festival Stage, the Advent Stage, and the Skullcandy Main Stage. I was impressed that even though Detroit was only the second stop on the tour, the timeline of all stages was accurate and all performances flowed smoothly. Hole in the Wall: Steve’s Bar Revisited Detroit, MI
We go to shows at St. Andrew’s in Detroit a lot. Door times can be unpredictable so a lot of time is spent at Steve’s Bar because it’s next to St. Andrew’s. The place has a type of old-world charm that is uniquely its own. Three things make this place interesting: 1. The Owners 2. The Decor 3. Artist Spotlight: ANR
September 13 marks the day ANR releases the Deluxe Edition of Stay Kids. ANR is A psychedelic synth-pop duo that met while studying in Miami. The group has played with bands such as Animal Collective, Neon Indian, and No Age, but has spent much of this year headlining their own tour in both the U.S. and the U.K. Noize will be in attendance at their show on September 5th at Detroit’s Lager House. Their music has drawn comparisons to such groups as MGMT, Passion Pit, Coldplay and even the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
