The Pretty Reckless @ Royal Oak Music Theatre 10/24/11 (Photos and Review)
Taylor Momsen – Vocals Ben Phillips – Guitar Mark Damon – Bass Jamie Perkins – Drums http://www.theprettyreckless.com I bet when Taylor Momsen’s friends want to tease her, they call her by the nickname of her Gossip Girl character, “Little J.” There ain’t nothing “little” about frontwoman Taylor Momsen-she is all woman. Even though she’s only 18 years old, Taylor knows exactly what she wants and gets it. Years ago Ms. Momsen admirably recognized that she wanted to front a band and play her kind of music. Momsen’s ability to pursue and recognize her passions at a young age is of great respect. Taylor’s choice of covering The White Stripes “Seven…

Evanescence @ Royal Oak Music Theatre 10/24/11 (Review and Photos)
Six hours ago Amy Lee tweeted, “Detroit took the cake. Best crowd of the tour so far!” Detroit’s sold out crowd was equally impressed by Evanescence in terms of performance and stage production. The audience was a diverse mix of ages and ethnicities mixed with the usual Goth-garbed Amy Lee look-alikes. It was a great spot to people watch that night because it was interesting to see such a wide variety of people openly displaying their passion for the music in various different ways. Amy Lee’s voice is startling. Her rare voice, piano abilities, and goth metal/rock band are an entrancing mix. Everybody knows the girl can sing, but to…

The Slackers, Deal’s Gone Bad and Matt Wixson’s Flying Circus @ The Blind Pig 10/20/11 (Review)
It was another Ska-charged night at The Blind Pig this past Thursday. The Slackers always draw a crowd when headlining—especially with the line up they had that night. Matt Wixson’s Flying Circus Deal’s Gone Bad The Slackers Matt Wixson’s Flying Circus played a tight, ten song set which included their recently released EP, “Jeffy” (download it for free from Community Records or Open Hand Records). Their music evokes a kind of no apologies-in your face-we will take whatever life throws at us head on feeling and is loud. They play catchy melodies, punk-like folky riffs with lyrics that easily get stuck in your head through songs like “Drinking Hymn of…

Yellowcard @ St. Andrew’s Hall 10/23/11 (Photos and Review)
Ryan Key – vocals, guitar Sean Mackin – violin, vocals Ryan Mendez – guitar, vocals Longineu Parsons III – drums Sean O’Donnell- bass, vocals Yellowcard is so energetic that they had to prod the Detroit crowd to pick it up a little bit in order to keep up with the fast-paced band. Of course the most obvious thing that sticks out about Yellowcard is that they have a violinist in the midst of a punk pop/rock alternative band. Sean is a joy to watch because he seems to be having such a great time playing. The song “For You, And Your Denial” especially showcased Sean’s skills and was my favorite…

Michigan band Every Avenue is a musically strong group that produces contagious songs. Sunday night in Detroit the band meshed well together and performed with a zest that is customary of their live shows. Every Avenue is another example of the the large pool of musicians that Michigan is proud to call their own. SETLIST…

Album Review: Real Estate’s “Days” 10/22/2011 (Score 81%)
Kevin via tranzcontinental.com The New Jersey band Real Estate has just released it’s second full-length album, “Days.” On this follow-up the band continues to combine meditative lyrics and relaxing guitar-pop to create a simple and atmospheric sound. Real Estate is very good at using guitars to create a relaxed ‘beach-wave’ sound. Much of this is is due to the unique style of the band’s guitarist, Matt Mondanile, who also plays guitar under the name Ducktails and might also be remembered for having collaborated with Animal Collective’s Panda Bear. Throughout their record releases, the band has shown a common underlying theme. These simple guitar songs are all reflecting the romanticized way…
