Evanescence @ Royal Oak Music Theatre 10/24/11 (Review and Photos)

Six hours ago Amy Lee tweeted, “Detroit took the cake. Best crowd of the tour so far!” Detroit’s sold out crowd was equally impressed by Evanescence in terms of performance and stage production. The audience was a diverse mix of ages and ethnicities mixed with the usual Goth-garbed Amy Lee look-alikes. It was a great spot to people watch that night because it was interesting to see such a wide variety of people openly displaying their passion for the music in various different ways.

Amy Lee’s voice is startling. Her rare voice, piano abilities, and goth metal/rock band are an entrancing mix. Everybody knows the girl can sing, but to hear that caliber of vocal ability live is a true treat. Her stage presence was endearing because the audience could sense that Amy was working hard to put on an exceptional show as she worked all areas of the stage. Amy’s gracious and genuine smile showed the audience that she was enjoying performing.

Royal Oak Music Theatre’s acoustics sounded especially good that night but it was the lighting that really blew everyone away and pulling the show together. A great lighting designer knows how to use color and light to evoke emotions and bring out the aura of the music. The vibrant, pink, turquoise, green, royal blue, purple, and red lighting mixed with the white strobes and myriad of spotlights were dazzling. That sort of bold lighting is usually only seen at arena shows, so it was striking to see at a smaller venue.
