Voodoo Fest is an interesting mix of music, art, and local New Orleans food. Our top showstoppers for the day were: Calvin Harris, Desaparecidos, Royal Teeth, Allen Stone and Boys Noize. Calvin Harris performed at the same time as Macklemore & Ryan Lewis which was not an enviable position to be for Macklemore because the EDM music was contagious and very loud. By Alexis Simpson In 2012 Conor Oberst resurrected his political punk band, Desaparecidos, and brought them to Detroit last Sunday for a performance at The Majestic Theatre. The So So Glos out of Brooklyn opened, and garnered a mixed reception. The frontman was perhaps too talkative considering most of the crowd had probably never heard of his band. Usually a band has to earn the right to preach by allowing their music to gain attention before their words do. South African Jean-Philip Grobler’s band, St. Lucia, took over The Crofoot last Friday in celebration of their new album When the Night. St. Lucia is regarded as “up-and coming” in most music publications, and the sold-out Crofoot audience reveled in the chance to see Jean-Philip perform his new material live. Grobler’s stage presence was impressive which is to be expected because he’s been performing since he was a boy-a choir boy!
