Forty Art Wonders at The Chicago Institute of Art
By Alexis Simpson Last weekend we breezed through The Chicago Institute of Art and were in awe of the artwork. It is quite powerful to see a particular piece of art in person after seeing it a zillion times in photos. We compiled a list of some of our pieces. ACROBATS AT THE CIRQUE FERNANDO BY PIERRE-AUGUSTE RENOIR (FRENCH) (FRANCISCA AND ANGELINA WARTENBERG) OIL ON CANVAS, 1879: One of four permanent circuses in Paris, the Cirque Fernando opened in 1875. The two girls painted were ages 17 and 13. After their performance, the girls bowed and gathered up tissue-wrapped oranges tossed to them in appreciation. YOUNG WOMAN SEWING BY PIERRE-AUGUSTE RENOIR…

Death Grips @ Magic Stick 11/18/12 (Review, Setlist & Photos)
By Alexis Simpson All week we looked forward to blowing off steam at the Death Grips show at the Magic Stick in Detroit, MI. Today the Death Grips were deservedly awarded an accolade as Spin’s “Artist of the Year.” Their sound is intense, primal, guttural, bass-ridden, industrial, earthy, and delightfully unusual. Percussionist Zack Hill set the pulse of the night with his unrelenting drumming. Stefan “MC Ride” Burnett spouts his lyrics face to face with his audience and dances with wild abandon. This along with his lean, sweaty, and tattooed torso make for commendable stage presence. Death Grips have become media darlings of the music world due to their intense sound, devotion to their…

Noize Favorite Photographers: Olivia Bee
We are starting a section highlighting our favorite photographers, and I’m excited to announce Olivia Bee as our first Noize-recognized photographer. Her work is whimsical, dreamy, sensual, and showcases the softer side of what it’s like to be a teenager. Olivia picked up her first camera at the age of 10, gained Converse as her first major commercial client at the age of 15, and just released a major Le Monde d’Hermès campaign and video at her current age of 18. It’s hard to not be a little envious of her success at such a young age, but her talent is undeniably inspiring. We first heard of her on Vice and Rookie…

Amanda Palmer @ St. Andrew’s Hall 11/13/12 (Photos & Review)
By Alexis Simpson Amanda Palmer & The Grand Theft Orchestra, Simple Pleasure, and Jherek Bischoff put on a theatrical performance for eclectic Detroit fans. Amanda Palmer briefly appeared on stage to give her openers a proper introduction before each of their sets. Yet before her own stage appearance, there was a slight delay due to Amanda feeling under the weather. Admirably, there were no obvious signs of illness throughout her entire performance. Ms. Palmer brought in her own soundboard, crew, and lighting which helped to enhance the aura of the show and shut up critics spouting off about her Kickstarter success. Detroit enthusiastically embraced Amanda Palmer’s performance due to there…
