Fun. Shines @ The Fillmore Detroit 1/26/12 (Review & Photos)
By Alexis Simpson This summer when we saw Fun. perform live at Detroit’s St. Andrew’s Hall, we knew big things were coming their way. We never could have predicted they would get to perform at Obama’s inauguration and be nominated for six Grammys. While it was wonderful to see them perform at an intimate venue such as St. Andrew’s Hall, it was even more fantastical to see them backed by an impressive stage show that supported and enhanced their theatrical pop music. Nate Ruess is a showstopper as a frontman due to his passion for performance, strong voice, and stage presence. The Detroit crowd adored him and were impessed by…

Jamaican Queens=Cool Kids of the Music Scene
By Alexis Simpson Detroit’s own Jamaican Queens are making waves with popular media publications. This month, Spinner made “Kids Get Away” their “Video of the Day” and Nylon Magazine interviewed them. The Nylon interview mentions that the group is currently on tour and will attend Austin’s SXSW. Their next performance in Michigan is at Pontiac’s Crofoot with Big Freedia and Tunde Olaniran. We plan on attending to review the show and take photos. Can’t wait! Also, put March 5th on your calendar, because that’s the day Jamaican Queens release their LP Wormfood. We noticed that Jamaican Queens hired Big Hassle for publicity which shows that they are serious. Big Hassle also…

Grace Potter and the Nocturals @ Royal Oak Music Theatre 1/17/13 (Photos & Setlist)
By Alexis Simpson Usually when we photograph a show, we are familiar with the artist’s work. For this show, we were newbies when it came to Grace Potter. We had heard such wonderful things about her live show, and had to see for ourselves what all the hype was about. Grace Potter is a lot of fun on stage because she dances with abandon, shakes her hair about while playing multiple instruments, and interacts beautifully both with the crowd and her band. Vocally she’s very strong, and her show prompted me to want to learn more about her music. It doesn’t hurt that she is lovely as well! ttp://www.gracepotter.com http://www.twitter.com/gracepotter http://www.youtube.com/gracepotterofficial http://plus.google.com/10039841475066255……

WTF? Would you Go to a Toilet Restaurant?
There is a toilet-themed restaurant based in Taiwan with several other locations throughout Asia. Owner Wang Zi-Wei says that his inspiration for “Modern Toilet” came from a Japanese cartoon Dr. Stump who loved to “play with poop and swirl it on a stick.” Customers dine on acrylic toilets prettily decorated with designs like roses and seashells. Mealsals are served in miniature toilet bowls, and drinks are served out of urinals that can be taken home as souvenirs. Their website asks visitors if they want to “GO PEE-PEE OR GO Poo-Poo” and lists entrees such as “green dysentery,” “bloody poop” and “diarrhea with dried droppings.” Asians are known to be more…

Langhorne Slim @ Royal Oak Music Theatre 1/17/12 (Photos & Review)
By Alexis Simpson Langhorne Slim is one of my top ten favorite artists. I missed seeing him perform last year when he played at the Bling Pig in Ann, Arbor, so I was beyond excited to see him live this year on tour with Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t listen to his honest music about love and life. When he got on stage, Langhorne Slim had to sing over the talkative audience much to my dismay. But by the middle of his performance, the crowd was into it. Even the people in the way back of the large venue were…

DAY 2: Detroit International North American Auto Show 2013 (Photos & Review By Alexis)
By Alexis Simpson Today was an exciting day because two of my auto show photos were featured in a Wall Street Journal Gallery! Hopefully a few more will get published. Jacob Giampa also shot Wednesday night with me. We noticed that there was less free booze, but more models and cars. Guys, if you’re looking to try your best lines on the models, do not ask them if they have driven the car they are modeling for. I heard each model asked that all day long! I’m photographing the auto show for news/documentary purposes only, so don’t look for anything too artsy. I tried to shoot as many different cars…

Detroit North American International Auto Show 2013 NAIAS (Review & Photos by Alexis)
By Alexis Simpson This year we decided to cover the North American International Auto Show in order to scope out the shiny new cars. It was exciting to see all the international press scurrying about and speaking in their native tongues. Volkswagen had the most dynamic setup with drinks aplenty, pulsing electronic music, and lovely dancing models. I photographed the cars that I thought were the most eye-catching, and will be posting all photos tonight and updating the make and model of cars over the next few days. Which cars do you like? My top car of the show is the Bentley Speed Convertible otherwise known as the the Continental…
