Anika @ the Cave in the Russell Industrial Center 10/9/11 (Interview, Review, and Photos)
PART ONE: THE INTERVIEW Anika had worked as a political journalist and as a music promoter before crossing paths with Portishead producer, Geoff Barrow. A friend told Anika that some guys were looking for “a weird singer” and unbeknownst to Anika, she would soon be a professional touring singer with a new album produced by Geoff Barrow and backed by the band Beak. Her sound is an ingenious mix of punk, funk, pop, dub, and electronica. In preparation for the Detroit show, Noize got the chance to ask Anika a few questions. How has your tour experience been so far in America? How does it compare to performing in Europe? What…

Fleet Foxes with The Walkmen in Ann Arbor, 9/29/11 (Review, Photos and Video)
Kevin from tranzcontinental.com After playing a long show Thursday, Fleet Foxes tweeted “Thanks Ann Arbor, we needed that!” Occasionally bands will say they enjoy a particular show more than others, but Fleet Foxes frontman Robin Pecknold seemed sincere when he said “This has been one of our favorite shows, ever.” Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor, Mich. is a spectacular venue in itself, its incredible acoustics reverberating around its shell shaped interior, giving the harmonizing indie-folk group the acoustics their sound deserves. I’ve been told that singing on the stage at Hill is a unique experience, that as the sound leaves the singer it goes out into the dark abyss…

The Raconteurs @ MI Fest 9/17/2011 (Photos)
To put it simply, The Raconteurs shined on the night of the first MI Fest. What a lucky crowd of people we were that night to witness the re-awakening of a band of paramount importance. The Black Belles @ MI Fest (Photos & Review)
The Black Belles could be seen throughout the day checking out different performances at MI Fest. Meanwhile many festival attendees had the Black Belles slated as one of the top new groups that they wanted to see at the festival. Jack White discovered the group and is helping them to make their presence known with the release of an album in November. Smart move Jack! The girls impressed the crowd with their modern blend of grunge and soul. Photographing them was a blast with their striking good looks and strong stage presence. Check out the photos… The Black Belles

A Night of Ska Punk @ the Magic Stick! CBJ, We Are The Union, Have Nots, and Big D and the Kids Table 9/23/11 (Review)
CBJ (Saint Clair Shores, MI) was the ideal opening Ska punk band for We Are The Union, Have Nots and Big D and the Kids Table at Magic Stick in Detroit on Friday the 23rd. They set the tone for the show: a whirlwind of energy with slamming bodies, pumping fists and some good old skanking. They played a tight set with piercing horns and sax (Adam Gill on trumpet, Bud Koltys on trombone and Mark Van Baak on tenor sax), a steady bass (Josh Young), drums like a machine (Mike Land) and a spirited guitar (Tom Skill). They actually sounded a little like Big D themselves. CBJ played their…

Ty Stone @ MI Fest (Photos and Interview)
Ty Stone has been described as “a powerhouse singer in an unprettified package.” This Detroit native has been earning lots of fans due to his raw talent, lyrics that hit home, and likeable personality. Music has always been a big part of Ty Stone’s life, but it took a little help from Kid Rock to take it to a whole new level. A good friend of Ty’s was able to slip Kid Rock a demo during a Piston’s game, and not long after, Ty found himself hanging with Kid Rock, touring, and putting out a new album on Top Dog/Atlantic Records. Ty’s story inspires, and he deserves his success. Noize got…

Photos of the Moment: The Third Man Rolling Record Store!
It’s been a week since MI fest and I’m still reflecting on the great mix of music that I heard. The Third Man Records Rolling Record Store was another great part of the MI Fest experience. It’s hard to imagine that one little ‘ol truck can bring about such excitement but it was the first thing I looked for upon entering the MI Fest grounds. One of the cool things that Third Man Records is doing is inviting selected artists that are traveling through Nashville to stop at Third Man Studio and record a single which is then made available on 7″ vinyl. All of these singles and more were…
