The Oceania Tour: Smashing Pumpkins @ The Palace of Auburn Hills 10/23/12 (Photos, Review, & Setlist)

The Smashing Pumpkins’s Oceania Tour is showing fans that Billy Corgan is serious about creating and sharing new music, and evolving with his band. This message has been conveyed throughout the tour by performing the “Oceania” album in its entirety. The Oceania Tour is a full-on production involving a giant orb showcasing innovative projection technology with stunning video prepared by world renowned visual artist Sean Evans (Roger Waters’ The Wall). Throughout the entire performance, Corgan displayed an intensity that stayed constant throughout the evening whether he was was thumping emphatically on his chest while singing a slow song or screaming like a banshee during his heavier material. Corgan is a dynamic and passionate artist who has put together a band that meshes well with his own avant garde style.

Detroit got a kick out of Corgan’s playful taunting as he chatted about our Detroit Tigers, Red Wings, and Jeff Schroeder’s preference for the L.A. Kings. He was especially chatty and affectionate with the crowd probably due to the fact that the frontman is no stranger to Detroit. Corgan resides in nearby Chicago, and back in the day he could be seen enjoying the Detroit electronic music scene. Many years ago he was spotted at Hamtramck’s famed Motor Lounge nightclub during a Paul Oakenfold performance. His security guards cleared out the VIP room for him, but Corgan preferred to be closer to the music and danced in the main room. Billy Corgan was extremely likeable last night and charmed us with his witty conversation and slow departure from the stage as he lingered several moments to chat with ecstatic fans.
