Alabama Shakes @ Royal Oak Music Theatre 5-21-13 (Photos)
The last time Alabama Shakes performed in Detroit was when they opened for Jack White’s solo show at the Scottish Rite Theatre in May of 2012. Now Alabama Shakes is in the midst of headlining a tour that is hitting stops in Europe, Canada, and the US. The soulful rock band easily sold out the Royal Oak Music Theatre due to the respectable buzz this group has generated for themselves. Alabama Shake’s frontwoman, Brittany Howard, has been compared to such greats as Aretha Franklin and Janis Joplin. She is a 24-year-old legend in the making that was able to hold the Royal Oak audience with the strength of her voice,…

Jamaican Queens @ a Loft Party! (Photos)
By Alexis Simpson Last Saturday there were a lot of great local bands playing in Detroit, but upon learning that Jamaican Queens were playing a private party, we knew that would be something we had to document. This trio is our current reigning favorite Detroit band and a sweaty 500º loft party somehow added to their ambiance. By Alexis Simpson Last Saturday night PJ Lager’s House hosted a party for The Pathetic Sounds of Detroit album which features 11 new recordings recorded specifically for this album by Detroit bands, recorded on analog tape, and pressed onto 12″ vinyl records. The HandGrenades The Ashley’s White Shag The ILL Itches Citizen Smile Patrick Davy & the Ghosts Nam Kook & the Typhoon Hit Society The Bad Mics Emily Rose We were there specifically to check out White Shag because we dig bad ass rocker chicks, and wanted to check out the band that recently won the “Outstanding Hard Rock/Metal Group” award at the Detroit Music Awards. Alkaline Trio w Bayside and Off With Their Heads @ Clutch Cargos 5/29 (Photos, Setlist & Review)
By Jacob Giampa Alkaline trio, Bayside and Off With Their Heads sold out Clutch Cargos in downtown Pontiac last week. The old church was packed with devoted fans. Opening the night was the fast-paced Off With Their Heads that really started the show off on the right foot. Up next was Bayside-the rockers from New York got everyone on their feet and moving. Alkaline Trio has been a band for over 17 years now and they have some of the most loyal fans out there. I think I speak for all the people there when I say that they are still awesome and the show was even better! If they…

Movement 2013 Day One and Two Recap & Photos
By Alexis Simpson Movement is all about pacing yourself because it involves 3 days of festival and after parties featuring the best parties of the year. Our day one involved a full day of festival activity at Hart Plaza. Movement is a different kind of festival. In March, we traveled to Miami for the big and flashy Ultra Fest. Detroit’s EDM festival is more organic and features some big names mixed with more obscure and up-and-coming artists. The festival layout is manageable because fans don’t have to walk too far to get from state to stage. For us, day two was all about the afterparaties. Technically our day two started right…
