Jamaican Queens @ a Loft Party! (Photos)
By Alexis Simpson Last Saturday there were a lot of great local bands playing in Detroit, but upon learning that Jamaican Queens were playing a private party, we knew that would be something we had to document. This trio is our current reigning favorite Detroit band and a sweaty 500º loft party somehow added to their ambiance. The HandGrenades The Ashley’s White Shag The ILL Itches Citizen Smile Patrick Davy & the Ghosts Nam Kook & the Typhoon Hit Society The Bad Mics Emily Rose We were there specifically to check out White Shag because we dig bad ass rocker chicks, and wanted to check out the band that recently won the “Outstanding Hard Rock/Metal Group” award at the Detroit Music Awards. Movement 2013 Day One and Two Recap & Photos
By Alexis Simpson Movement is all about pacing yourself because it involves 3 days of festival and after parties featuring the best parties of the year. Our day one involved a full day of festival activity at Hart Plaza. Movement is a different kind of festival. In March, we traveled to Miami for the big and flashy Ultra Fest. Detroit’s EDM festival is more organic and features some big names mixed with more obscure and up-and-coming artists. The festival layout is manageable because fans don’t have to walk too far to get from state to stage. For us, day two was all about the afterparaties. Technically our day two started right…

The Armed @ The Scarab Club for Art X Detroit
I’m finally getting around to posting these great photos from Terry Peake’s Art X Detroit showcase last month. He invited The Armed to open at The Scarab Club, and these guys were insane fun. http://www.thearmed.com

Terry Peake: Kreske Art Fellow Award Recipient 2013
This week Detroit celebrates Art X Detroit event which is a five-day multidisciplinary celebration, from April 10-14, 2013, that will exclusively present works created by the 2011-2012 Kresge Eminent Artists and Artist Fellows, along with a special visual arts exhibition at MOCAD that runs through April 28, 2013. Art X Detroit is supported by The Kresge Foundation. Noize is profiling Terry Peake, who is being recognized as a classically trained composer and veteran of the Detroit rock scene. He has chosen progressive rock and the application of modern compositional techniques within it as his current main artistic focus. We are documenting his first two performances that take place this weekend. We urge…

An Interview with Nay Nay Bane: Detroit Graphic Designer/Illustrator
By Alexis Simpson We had been desperately in need of a logo/branding, but I couldn’t come up with any ideas so I put a hold on it until recently. Our publication’s name is “Noize” because of the noise music makes and the noise found in low-light photography. I thought it would be zany to make my pet Umbrella Cockatoo our mascot/logo because she’s f’in loud. Drummer Matt Moy suggested the work of Nathan Bortz (Nay Nay Bane) which I had already seen on several local band flyers. I liked his art and liked the idea of using an artist that works with local musicians, so I contacted Nathan right away.…

Tunde Olaniran @ The Crofoot 1/31/12 (Photos)
We first heard of Tunde Olaniran a few months ago when his PR rep told us about him. We were beyond excited to see him perform live for the first time. Our favorite rap duo out of Detroit, Passalacqua, even joined Tunde on stage near the end of the show! Check out Tunde ASAP, and you too will be singing, “I’m a brown boy! Ima Ima brown boy!” His dancers aren’t just backup dancers, but move in a such a way that is pure performance art. Also important to note, Tunde’s fanbase is very loyal, diverse, and know how to shake their ass! Genre: Electronic/Pop/R&B http://www.sonicbids.com/TundeOlaniran http://www.twitter.com/tundeolaniran http://www.myspace.com/tundeolaniranmusic PHOTOS THE…

Detroit Domination: Jamaican Queens @ The Crofoot 1/31/12 (Photos)
By Alexis Simpson I can’t stop listening to the Jamaican Queens. I listen to their new song “Water” at least 15-20 twenty times a day. March 5th is the release of their new album Wormfood, and I’m upset I can’t get ahold of this album much sooner. Even thought I’m still trying to better understand what the heck “trap-pop” is, I feel a little bit cooler every time I listen to this group. Their sound represents the gritty Detroit crazy-cool vibe that publications like Time Magazine and The New York Times like to write about. Check out photos from their performance with Tunde Olaniran and Big Freedia at The Crofoot in Pontiac, MI.…
