The Pretty Reckless @ St. Andrew’s Hall 10-25-13 (Photos, Setlist & Review)

Taylor Momsen is one of the most talented, ballsy, sultry and attractive women in rock ‘n roll today. Fortunately she always make it a point to stop in Detroit when touring. Ms. Momsen brought along her band to St. Andrew’s Hall for the Going to Hell tour which coincidentally is the name of the band’s latest single. This is a sort of “pre-tour” to prepare fans for their new album which is expected to be released in early 2014.

Taylor Momsen easily commanded the stage last Friday with her coltish legs, doe eyes, and serpentine  movements. Female fans wanted to be her, male fans wanted to have her, and probably so did many of the women. Momsen wasn’t afraid to shake things up as she grinded on her  older band mates all in the name of rock ‘n roll. Even if Momsen was plain and had no presence, her voice is strong enough to make waves. Equally helpful is that The Pretty Reckless’ music is ridiculously catchy. Rumor has it that Taylor Momsen was feeling a bit under the weather for her Detroit performance, but nobody in the audience would have guessed it. The group sounded strong. The only possible evidence of an illness, was that the band played a little shorter than usual. Regardless, most likely The Pretty Reckless will be back in 2014 in support of their up-and-coming album that fans are eagerly awaiting.

Taylor Momsen was relaxed, playful and gracious during her performance for a sizable crowd of enthused fans. Momsen possesses a strong voice ideal for rock. Tuesday night she convincingly switched from soft and sultry to grovely and hardcore best evidenced by the song “My Medicine.” The Pretty Reckless played a skillful mix of old favorites, covers, and new material off the Hit Me Like  a Man EP. Momsen was in town last October in order for the band (see photos here) to open up for Evanescence. With the release of the new EP and their latest show at The Crofoot, The Pretty Reckless keep getting better and better.

I bet when Taylor Momsen’s friends want to tease her, they call her by the nickname of her Gossip Girl character, “Little J.” There ain’t nothing “little” about frontwoman Taylor Momsen-she is all woman. Even though she’s only 18 years old, Taylor knows exactly what she wants and gets it. Years ago Ms. Momsen admirably recognized that she wanted to front a band and play her kind of music. Momsen’s ability to pursue and recognize her passions at a young age is of great respect.

Taylor’s choice of covering The White Stripes “Seven Army Nation” was very fitting considering The White Stripes was the first band she ever saw in concert. Momsen’s throaty voice and serpentine movements commanded the audience’s attention as the crowd discovered that not only is she uncommonly captivating, but also highly accomplished. She is supported by a group of experienced musicians who helped to show Detroit what The Pretty Reckless is all about. Loved it!
