Big Sean @ DTE Music Theatre 8/31/13 (Photos, Review & Setlist)
Big Sean performed an impressive and moving homecoming concert at DTE Music Theatre on August 31st. The performance was in celebration of his new album Hall of Fame, which was released within the same week of his show. The night was indeed a family affair as the Detroiter rapped alongside of his beaming Dad early in the concert, and later brought his mother on stage for a poignant slow dance in which the sensitive Big Sean showed he wasn’t afraid to shed a few tears in front of the 12,000+ crowd.
Even though Big Sean invited a bevy of guests on stage to perform with him including hip hop greats, Drake and Nicki Minaj, the young star spent most of the night holding down the stage solo. He gave props to Detroit on several occasions by wearing a Red Wings jersey, imploring fans to have hope for the future of the city, and by dancing around with a giant lion adorned in a ‘Detroit vs. Everybody’ t-shirt. Nor was he shy about issuing out advice to his fans by advising, “When love comes around, be fucking ready for it.” Big Sean was also quick to give praise throughout the night to his mentor, Kanye West, who gave Big Sean the chain he was wearing for his Detroit performance.
The talented band perched above Big Sean, a simple stage setup and effective lighting allowed for the rapper to shine without needing gimmicks or a fancy production to enhance the two-hour set. Top tracks from the night included “Started From the Bottom,” “Fire” and “Beware.” Big Sean is another musical example of something Detroit can be proud of.
