CARNIVORES TOUR: Linkin Park, 30 Seconds to Mars, AFI @ DTE Energy Music Theatre 8-30-14 (Review, Photos)

By Alexis Simpson

The Carnivores Tour took over DTE Energy Music Theatre last weekend with an incredibly strong lineup. AFI opened despite having the charisma and song catalog to be a stellar headliner in any venue. Singer Davey Hunter showcased his stamina as he performed gravity-defying rock leaps unlike any we have seen before.

SETLIST
The Leaving Song Pt. II
Girl’s Not Grey
I Hope You Suffer
Medicate
Love Like Winter
17 Crimes
The Days of the Phoenix
Silver and Cold
Miss Murder

Jared Leto of 30 Seconds to Mars looked like Hollywood Jesus with his long hair, big coat, celebrity status and big anthems. Near the end of the set, confetti was shot throughout DTE and 4 ft bright balloons bounced from the front of the stage all the way up into the hill. Leto brought Hollywood to Detroit, and knows how to liven things up. Despite being a muse of Terry Richardson, Leto is a bit camera shy, and makes concert photogs shoot from the soundstage which makes it difficult to document his grandiosity. It’s easier to get a sense of him better when closer, so maybe next time…We have to see you to feel you, as I always say!

Lastly, the guys of Linkin Parks are pros. Singer Chester is a lean mean screaming madman who is at the top of his game and genre. He sounds amazing and his energy is unrelentless. Quirky and charming Mike Shinoda, Linkin’s Park “rapper” effortlessly blends into the musical mix of LP. His was particularly on point in Michigan this weekend because his words were smoooth and he looked so damn happy. Between songs, 1-3 minute mixes of electronic music were performed between songs, which was a clever addition to the show. “Perfect Performance” are the two words to accurately describe their set. Not only is their music flawless-these guys are class acts. Last year when we got the chance to do a group interview with Linkin Park, the guys seemed personable and sharp. It was great again to see glimpses of Chester’s good attitude as he gleefully pointed out that there was a family that came all the way from Ecuador to the Detroit performance. Bennington also jumped into the audience for a good period of time, and then got a kick out of young kid who belted out Chester’s lyrics like a pro. Linkin Park is a highly celebrated band and deservedly earning legendary rock band status.

Honda Civic Tour 2012: Linkin Park @ the Palace of Auburn Hills (Photos, Review & Setlist)

By Alexis Simpson

Linkin Park has sold over 50 million records, won two Grammy awards, and conquered the art of sounding as equally convincing live in a giant arena as on a polished studio album. The Honda Civic Tour drew a robust and diverse crowd. Our audience moment of the night was watching a fourteen year old kid rock out on the floor alone as he unabashedly made eye contact with a few much older fans in the stands as a way to acknowledge their shared musical fun and great experience. The stage setup was complete with ramps, platforms, neon lighting, and sparking pyrotechnics. Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda’s unrelenting energy carried them all over the stage as they somehow managed to scream out frantic fast-paced lyrics to a hyped crowd. The combination of Mutemath, Incubus, and Linkin Park proved to be another year that The Honda Civic Tour puts together a brilliantly designed lineup.
