Jessica Hernandez & the Deltas @ The Magic Bag 7/20/12 (Photos & Review)

Detroit music lovers eagerly awaited Jessica Hernandez & the Delta’s performance this past Friday. This was Jessica’s first big local show since signing with Blue Note Records/EMI, and fans expected to hear some of the new material the band has been working on for the upcoming album. As a young singer/songwriter/artist, Jessica Hernandez is a blossoming talent in charge of her own image, musical style and career. This isn’t surprising since Ms. Hernandez comes from an entrepreneurial family that runs the successful Armando’s Mexican Restaurant and Mexicantown Bakery in Southwest Detroit. Before signing her record deal, Ms. Hernandez raised eyebrows when she cancelled her first meeting with Blue Note Records/EMI in order to bring the executives on to her own turf in order to better showcase her style.

Jessica’s style isn’t simple to define. Her roots are latin, but her music doesn’t fit into one specific genre. Last Friday night Jessica was all smiles and spunk as she showed off new and past material. Her stage performance is becoming more and more polished as she grows as an artist. The Deltas did a good job at keeping up with her, especially bassist Ben Sturley, whose enthusiasm onstage was appreciated by the crowded venue. New song “Young, Dumb and Drunk” was conveyed especially well to curious fans wondering how Jessica Hernandez & the Deltas will evolve now that they are backed by a major label. In person, Jessica is refreshingly unfiltered, friendly, genuine and possesses a creative indie edge which is exactly the same spirit of her music and live show.

Members: Jessica Hernandez (vocals+),  Ben Sturley (bass), Taylor Pierson (keys), Steve Stetson (drums) and Gordon Smith (guitar)
